How do Antioxidants Actually Work?
Humans generate energy and maintain their structure and function by a large number of chemical reactions which are collectively known as metabolism, needed to sustain life. Free radicals are constantly being formed during metabolism and it is important to remember that the body uses some free radicals for important functions that are essential for our survival. For example, certain immune cells use them to kill infectious bacteria. The human body also creates its own antioxidants which, when in balance, spare our healthy cells from oxidation by free radicals. Here’s the sciency bit:
ATOMS – electrons (negatively charged) that rotate around a core of protons (positively charged) and neutrons (no charge)
FREE RADICALS – Free radicals are highly reactive, unstable, electrically charged molecules (two or more atoms linked together) that can react with other molecules in the cells (like DNA), stealing their oxygen molecules and severely damaging or killing them (causing skin damage thus speeding up the aging process). These damaged molecules can also go on to become free radicals and damage more molecules (and so on) leading to a state of oxidative stress.
ANTIOXIDANTS – step in and donate an oxygen molecule to the free radical turning it back into a stable molecule and neutralising its ability to cause damage. These are essential for the survival of all living things.
So our bodies need a healthy balance of free radicals AND antioxidants, the problem arises when the free radicals outnumber the antioxidants. This is more common nowadays due to things like UV exposure, pollution, tobacco smoke and stress. Give your skin the helping hand it needs and feed it with Real World face care range to help fight the signs of aging. Carrot Seed Oils and many of our other oils are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect skin by limiting the production of free radicals, which can damage skin cells. Antioxidants in our skin care ranges can do a lot for the health and appearance of your skin.
